Episode 10: Feeling the Holiday Magic Yourself This Season
When you’re the magic maker, it can be easy to end the season feeling more frantic and frazzled than calm and connected. You want to create magic for your people but you are exhausted. And it would be nice to feel the magic too.
This episode is a followup to episode 9 about a simple mindset shift that helps you feel more connected to your people, but this time we’re talking about how you treat yourself. And we’re putting it in a holiday context so that you can feel the magic this year too.
A Sneak Peek of What You’ll Find in This Episode:
A Mindset Shift:
Religious philosopher Martin Buber taught a new way of thinking about connection:
I-Connection: Treating someone as an object in your life—something that helps you get what you want or is an obstacle in your path. This doesn’t breed a lot of connection, but is easy to fall into
I-Thou Connection: Treating someone as a “legitimate other” who has feelings and experiences and needs of their own and is someone that can be loved and seen and connected with
The I in That Relationship
Buber could have just called this an it or thou relationship but he included the I in there. That’s because the way you see yourself, the way you treat yourself, is directly tied to your relationships.
When we treat ourselves like an it—someone who needs to get it all done, a machine, skipping rest or relaxation—it usually means we treat other people like an it too.
And that breeds less connection. So we need to shift to treating ourselves like a thou.
